First of all, you may be wondering what mesothelioma is, and why I should be scared of it ?.....

Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is the medical name for cancer of the lung, and is usually caused by exposure to asbestos. Symptoms my not appear for up to 50 years or so after exposure to asbestos, and people who haven't had any contact with asbestos for many years, are now showing signs of having this deadly disease. The symptoms are usually shortness of breath, coughing, and chest pains and feeling very tired.

Why should I be scared of it ?

As a small child, I used to live near a factory which used asbestos to make fire-proof products and other insulating materials for the building industry. I believe that asbestos was also used in the manufacture of break linings. I can remember seeing the asbestos dust that spewed out of the factory covering the surrounding area (including part of our school playground) with this deadly snow like powder. Of course, as we were just kids at that time, we had absolutely no idea just how deadly this dust was. We even played in it completely unaware of its dangers.

The Horror Came Later.

It wasn't until years later after the factory had been closed down, that we began to see the full horrors of this white snow looking powder, we had played with as children. By this time I was much older, and the dangers of asbestos had been given massive coverage by the media, so I was now aware of what could happen to myself and hundreds of other people who lived in the same area as this factory in years to come.

TV Documentary.

This factory received national television coverage, and on one program they interviewed families who had suffered due to the problem of asbestos. I was shocked to see that I knew some of the people who had lost family members due to developing mesothelioma, in fact I actually went to school with some of the people who took part in the program. The program showed old photographs of the area around the factory (including my old school) covered in powder, and it really did look like it had been snowing. When you see all of this on television it really does make you just a little bit worried, especially when you have been in contact with asbestos like I have.

Treatments.

If mesothelioma is diagnosed early enough, a cure is possible with a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. However, in the case of a more advanced illness a cure is not possible, but with the right treatments the illness can be slowed down dramatically and medication can be used to ease any pain.

X-Rays.

As a precaution I did have x-rays a few years ago just to put my mind at rest, and thankfully they were all clear. The doctor recommended that I should have x-rays on a very regular basis just to be on the safe side. So, at the moment everything is ok, but I will always be just a little bit worried of what might happen in the future.

This is a disease resulting from cold. It is the exception rather than the rule, to meet with individuals in our Northern climate who are not afflicted with it in some form or other. It is easier to prevent than cure.

Strong, well developed lungs, a clean colon and skin, and catarrh, are seldom found together in the same body. Perfect lung development and a clean colon will alone effect a permanent cure.

Good habits are absolutely essential to health, which is equivalent to saying that regularity in living is an imperative necessity to that end. Regularity in rising and retiring; regularity in eating and drinking; regularity in exercise, all are equally important.

Not only does this regularity of conduct conduce to the attainment and maintenance of perfect health, but it enables the individual to accomplish more within the limits of the day, partly by economizing time, and partly by the added vigor due to improved health.

First, regularity in the hours of rising and retiring, namely, regulating the minimum period to be devoted to sleep. There is much conflict of opinion as to the amount of sleep necessary for the average adult.

We have in mind an old saying which runs as follows: "Six hours' sleep for a man, seven for a woman, and eight for a fool." This is somewhat arbitrary, and, moreover, is not in harmony with physiological law. In the first place, no hard and fast rule can be laid down that will cover all cases. Apart from the difference of sex, there are temperamental conditions which vary with every case. We are decidedly of the opinion that eight hours' sleep is necessary for the adult individual.

It has been affirmed by some authorities that the more the individual sleeps the longer he will live, which is a perfectly rational claim, in view of the fact that night is Nature's repair time, when she is busy at work replacing the ravages committed by wear and tear during the day. It is a well known fact that nearly all growth takes place during sleep.

Again, it is a fact not generally known that the heart receives no nourishment during the period of contraction, owing to the pressure upon the arteries which supply it with nutriment.

It is only during the infinitesimal pause between the contractions that these arteries can carry blood to the heart tissue; hence during sleep the heart- beats differ from those of our waking hours, being fewer in number, and with a more decided pause between. Now, the heart being to the body what the mainspring is to a watch, the necessity of affording it ample time for recuperation becomes apparent.

Those who have begun treatment may not enjoy eating because of side effects such as nausea and vomiting, dry mouth, sore throat, changing taste or smell, or constipation. Because your nutritional needs change during extended illness, your diet may need to change as well. The health care community recommends a general adult diet that is low in fat, includes small portions of meat and dairy products, and larger portions of fruits, vegetables, and grains. With diminished appetite during illness or therapy, it may not be possible to eat normally even though your need for calories and proteins has increased. Your doctor or dietician may advise that you concentrate on eating more meat, dairy products, and fats in order to consume enough proteins and calories. You may even need to cut back on fruits, vegetables, and grains in order to eat enough of these other foods.

During treatment, your doctor or dietician may recommend a special diet. These diets are intended to compensate for a particular deficiency you may be experiencing. Special diets may be assigned long or short term to address acute needs. Sometimes a pre-prepared nutritional formula, or vitamin and mineral supplements may be prescribed.

Remember, there are no steadfast nutrition rules during cancer treatment. Some patients may continue to enjoy eating and have normal appetite throughout most of their treatment. Others may have days when they don't feel like eating at all, and even the thought of food makes them sick. Following are some suggestions which may help:

  • When you are able to eat, eat meals and snacks with sufficient proteins and calories; they will help you keep up your strength.
  • Try eating frequent smaller meals throughout the day rather than fewer big ones. This may help you to eat more over the course of the day, yet you won't feel so full.
  • Many patients find their appetite is better early in the day. Consider having your main meal then and perhaps liquid meal replacements later in the day.
  • If you are able to eat only certain foods, stick with them until you are able to eat others. Try a liquid meal replacement for extra protein and calories.
  • If you don't feel like eating solid foods, try liquids such as juice, soup, or milkshakes, which can provide important calories and proteins. If eating whole fresh fruits is a problem, for instance, try blending fruit into a milkshake. Also try softer, cool, or frozen foods such as yogurt or popsicles.
  • When you can't eat at all, don't worry about it. Get back to normal eating as soon as possible, but if your problem does not improve within a couple of days, be sure to notify your doctor.
  • Try to drink plenty of fluids, especially on those days when you don't feel like eating. Water is essential to your body's basic functioning. For most adults, 6-8 cups of fluid a day are a good goal.
  • Regular exercise may help your appetite. Check with your doctor for an exercise program which may be suitable for you.
